We will share with you what calcium carbonate is in three articles. This is the first article, which will introduce heavy calcium carbonate and light calcium carbonate from five different angles of production method, bulk density, oil absorption value, whiteness and moisture content.
The main raw materials of LVT floor and SPC floor are polyvinyl chloride and calcium carbonate powder, and calcium carbonate can be divided into heavy calcium carbonate and light calcium carbonate.
Calcium carbonate is an important and widely used inorganic salt. It is usually divided into heavy calcium carbonate and light calcium carbonate according to different processing methods. Whether it is heavy calcium carbonate or light calcium carbonate, calcium carbonate is the most widely used powder filler in plastics, rubber, paper and other industries.
Heavy calcium carbonate: also known as ground calcium carbonate, referred to as heavy calcium, is made from natural calcite, limestone, dolomite, chalk, shells, etc. through physical processing.
Light calcium carbonate: also known as precipitated calcium carbonate, referred to as light calcium, is processed by chemical methods.
①Production method
Heavy calcium is mainly a powder material obtained from natural minerals such as calcite, marble, limestone, chalk, and white marble through mechanical grinding;
Light calcium is mainly a powder material obtained from limestone as raw material through calcination, digestion, carbonization, dehydration, drying, grading and other processes.
②Bulk density
The bulk density of heavy calcium products is relatively large, generally 0.8-1.3g/cm3;
The bulk density of light calcium products is small, generally 0.5-0.7g/cm3, and the bulk density of some nano-calcium carbonate products can even reach about 0.28g/cm3.
③Oil absorption value
Due to the large particles, smooth surface and small specific surface area of heavy calcium, the oil absorption value is low, generally 40-60mL/100g;
Light calcium particles are fine, the surface is rough, and the specific surface area is large, so the oil absorption value is high, generally 60-90mL/100g.
④Whiteness
Because heavy calcium has relatively more impurities, the whiteness of the product is generally 89% to 93%, and a very small number of products can reach 95%;
The purity of light calcium products is relatively high, so the whiteness is generally 92% to 95%, and some products can reach 96% to 97%.
⑤Moisture content
The moisture content of heavy calcium products is generally 0.2% to 0.3%, and the moisture content is relatively low, but also relatively stable. Some high-end products can even reach about 0.1% moisture;
Ordinary light calcium products have a moisture content of 0.3% to 0.8%, which sometimes fluctuates to a certain extent and is not very stable.
